Source Rock Kinetics

The kerogen conversion into hydrocarbons can be assessed by modeling its kinetics (chemical reaction rate), that it is approximated from the screening data (TOC and Pyrolysis) from the source rock samples. This source rock maturation modeling, together with the burial history, is a powerful tool for predicting expelled products and GOR from one ore multiple potential source rocks.

1D Modeling

1D modeling allows to reconstruct the entire burial history of the well, together with its paleo-heat flow, porosity, pressure, thermal gradient and major structural events. The software models in the transient thermal model so heat flow can be predicted away from well control and through geological time. Applying this modeled maturity vs time and depth, thermal maturity can be calculated and so hydrocarbon generation and expulsion from the source rock. This modeling tool also allows multi 1D modeling integrating several neighbor wells within the basin.

2D & 3D Modeling

The 2D and 3D models are build up from previous 1D, multi 1D models, and/or structural maps provided by seismic. Once the 3D model is complete, it allows to surf along its geological history for it deposition, uplift and basement deformation. This tool incorporates the previous described software to characterize in detail the source rock within the basin model, and its hydrocarbon generation volumetric potential. Combining the modeled thermal history, source rock, structural geology, permeability-porosity, it is possible to predict hydrocarbons migration paths and traps. These simple geologic models can be created for several hypotheses to evaluate different scenarios and hydrocarbon estimations for conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
